Wilmington area Westies is currently a small group - but we are growing!
Everyone here is a LOVING and SUPPORTIVE human - we welcome ANYONE who wants to dance or even just watch & hang out with a fun & accepting group of people!
WHAT IS WEST COAST SWING??
The WHOLE TRUTH!!
FIRST - West Coast Swing is for EVERYONE ... any age, any size, any capability.
The beauty of this dance is that it's NOT just for "couples" - in the WCS (West Coast Swing) World, everyone dances with everyone, so even those without a partner are welcomed and able to dance at our gatherings!
At first, it might seem overwhelming or "odd", or to some, "awkward" dancing with strangers.... you may also see a male dancing with a male, or female dancing with a female, or even a female leading a male (are we blowing your mind yet?). It's highly ENCOURAGED for all dancers to learn BOTH roles (lead & follow) in the dance, it allows you to understand what your leader, or your follower, is feeling in the dance!
The KEY to the AMAZING West Coast Swing Community is ACCEPTANCE and SUPPORT.
At WCS functions and events you'll sometimes encounter truly famous Pro's who will readily have conversations with you & even dance with you on a social floor. Everyone in this community LOVES the dance and encourages learning and the act of dancing - it's PACKED full of amazing humans across the globe!
SO .... what about the dance?
West Coast Swing has a long history, born out of Lindy Hop. But WCS is danced on a "slot" (think of a box the size of a pool diving-board). There are 6-count patterns and 8-count patterns in the basic "toolbox" - BUT -
anyone who can count to "2" can learn this dance!!!
UNIQUE to WCS - we dance to almost any kind of music (yes, rock, pop, country, rap, blues .... etc!).
Also, WCS can be danced to many 'speeds' of music (super-slow up to super-fast). Obviously, skill level & familiarity will determine how easy or hard dancing WCS to "your favorite song" might be - but that's all what the journey in West Coast Swing is about!
**MOST** "Westie" dance groups are happy to allow first-timers to come for free to "watch/observe"
on their group nights or social dance nights (anything except structured workshops for targeted learning).
JUST ASK for a Group Organizer! We promise you will be warmly-welcomed!!
Regardless, most groups only charge $10-15 cover charge and you'll get amazing entertainment!
